Pure Tone Audiometry

Pure Tone Audiometry (PTA) is a fundamental hearing test used to evaluate an individual's hearing sensitivity across a range of frequencies. During the test, the patient wears headphones and listens to a series of pure tones at various pitches and volumes. The patient is asked to respond each time they hear a sound, allowing the audiologist to determine the softest sounds the individual can detect at each frequency. This data is plotted on an audiogram, which visually represents the hearing threshold levels for both ears. PTA helps in diagnosing the type and degree of hearing loss, whether it is conductive, sensorineural, or mixed. It is particularly valuable for identifying hearing impairment in children and adults and is often the first step in hearing evaluation.
