Swallowing Therapy, also known as dysphagia therapy, is an essential service provided at HHB Speech and Hearing Clinic for individuals experiencing difficulty in swallowing food, liquids, or saliva. Dysphagia can result from various medical conditions, including stroke, neurological disorders (like Parkinson’s or ALS), head and neck surgeries, trauma, or developmental delays in children. If left untreated, swallowing difficulties can lead to malnutrition, dehydration, choking, aspiration pneumonia, and a significant decline in quality of life.
Our experienced speech-language pathologists perform a comprehensive clinical swallow evaluation and, when needed, recommend advanced instrumental assessments like FEES (Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing) or VFSS (Videofluoroscopic Swallow Study) in coordination with medical teams. Based on the diagnosis, a customized therapy plan is developed that may include swallowing exercises, postural techniques, diet modifications, compensatory strategies, and neuromuscular stimulation to improve strength and coordination of the muscles involved in swallowing.
For children with feeding issues due to sensory or motor impairments, we offer feeding therapy to ensure safe and adequate nutrition intake. Our therapy also involves caregiver training, so family members are well-informed about safe feeding practices and signs of aspiration.
HHB Speech and Hearing Clinic is dedicated to restoring safe, effective swallowing through compassionate, evidence-based care. Our goal is to help patients eat and drink with ease, comfort, and confidence—whether it's a child learning to swallow or an adult recovering from illness.
